Dog Cooling Collars: Where to Buy Them to Keep Your Dog From Overheating

Why Your Pets Need Dog Cooling Collars

For starters, dogs can overheat (just like humans) and be at risk of heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

They don‘t necessarily need to be outdoors to be at risk as some large and giant dog breeds with heavy coats can become overheated indoors.

If you travel frequently with your dog as a companion or enjoy warm weather activities with your pet, consider protecting his or her health with a cooling collar.

Competition dogs—those that participate in agility, tracking or Schutzhund events—benefit from cooling products as well.

Even if you are just transporting your dog in a vehicle or motor home for a short distance, you might want to err on the safe side by including a cooling collar in your travel preparations, as vehicles can break down or be involved in accidents.

Being stranded on a hot day with your best furry friend could turn into a dangerous situation if you are not prepared to keep him or her cool.

Kool Collar

The KoolCollar works by two different methods so you can use it indoors or outdoors.

1. To use it to cool down your pet outdoors, simply fill the collar with ice cubes from the freezer and secure it around their neck.

2. As the ice melts, the water drips down the dog’s coat just like sweat.

3. As the water evaporates, the animal’s skin is cooled and its core body temperature lowered.

While this is a relatively easy and inexpensive process, there is the downside of water potentially dripping all over the place.

Fortunately, the KoolCollar comes with KoolTubes for inside use, which eliminates this negative aspect.

KoolTubes are filled with a non-toxic liquid so there is no danger of harm to your pet if one should be punctured. According to the manufacturer, each KoolTube lasts about 30 to 50 minutes, depending on how active the dog is and the ambient temperature.

You can provide perpetual cooling for your fur friend by purchasing a refill pack of KoolTubes to complement the pair that comes with the collar.

That way, you can always have refills frozen and ready to restock the collar as needed.

The collars come in small, medium and large and are sized according to the dog’s neck size. Price points are under $20 for any size, and refilll tubes cost under $10 per pair.

The only downside to this particular collar is the need to keep refilling it with either ice or the refill tubes. With each tube effective for just about an hour, owners could be limited in the kind of activities they could enjoy with their pets, and some might consider the process labor-intensive to maintain.

Polar Products

Polar Products dog cooling collars also work by using water-absorbing polymers to keep the collars cool.

According the manufacturer’s information, the collars will stay cool for up to 24 hours and do not absorb the animal’s sweat, thus avoiding unpleasant complications like mold and mildew.

A Polar neck tie is recommended for toy-size dogs and fastens with a hook and loop closure, while the Polar animal collar is the best choice for larger breeds and features a quick release mechanism for safety.

The benefit of collars using water absorption technology over those using ice is the collar stays cooler longer and is relatively hassle-free to use, as owners are not continually refilling them with ice or swapping out frozen refill tubes. At an attractive price point of under $10, this is an incredibly economic way to keep your dog cool and comfortable.

Thank you, Cat R, for making a very important comment! There are many types of cooling apparel and accessories for humans as well as pets, and they can be life savers in circumstances like you reference. Our little guy gets overheated easily, and I use a cooling neck wrap for him in the summer.

Anyway, thanks for alerting our readers to the availability of such wonderful products, and taking you for taking time out of your busy schedule to leave feedback for my hub.

The 'human' version seemed to have helped out in Iraq. A lot of us used it.

Hi Anurag, and thanks for commenting! That is a very interesting question about the electronic tick repellents, and I'm not sure what the answer is. However, if they do work, they are a tremendous boon to owners as ticks as such a deadly hazardous for dogs.

Great list! Always wondered whether the dog collar tick repellents really work? I know coolers work, but electronic tick repellents?
