Essentials Checklist
Check the local discount stores for bargains on these supplies, and be sure to check the recycling bin for items like the box and newspaper.
I buy my art supplies at one of those stores that prices everything at a dollar like Dollar Tree or A.C. Moore because they offer a weekly 40 to 50% discount coupon.
However, if you live outside the United States, you may need to shop online for your craft supplies to find the best selection.
- Rectangle shape cardboard box measuring approximately 7 ½ x 14 ½ inches
- Tissue paper in assorted colors
- Pipe cleaners
- Pinking Shears
- Acrylic Paint
- Newspaper
- Paintbrush
Cover your work surface with the newspapers and paint the outside of the box with the acrylic paint. If there is a lot of printing or other designs on the box, it may take several coats of paint cover it completely. Let it dry for several hours or overnight.
Get Your Tissue Paper Ready to Fold & Cut
Instructions to Make Tissue Paper Flowers
Choose ten (10) colors of tissue paper and stack them neatly one on top of the other. Colors can be complimentary or contrasting depending on the overall color scheme of any other decorations.
In the example, the box is painted a medium blue, and the flowers are crafted from red, white, blues, yellows, and other vivid shades of tissue paper.
Fold the paper in half horizontally and cut into two pieces. Fold the two pieces in half and cut. You now have four groups of ten pieces of tissue papers.
Set three of the groups aside and work with the fourth group. For larger flowers, just omit the second folding and cutting and use the larger sheets of tissue paper and for miniature flowers, fold and cut the paper stack one more time.
Cutting the Tissue Paper Edges
Folding the Paper for Tissue Paper Flowers
1. Stack the tissue paper neatly, but do not stress about getting the sides exactly even.
Real flowers are not perfectly symmetrical, and any irregularity in the edges adds to the uniqueness and beauty of the finished tissue paper flowers.
2. Start at the bottom edge of the paper and fold the tissue paper up and over like a fan or accordion.
When the paper is completely folded, wrap a pipe cleaner tightly around the center of the paper to form the stem of the flower.
3. Use the pinking shears to snip each end of the tissue paper fan into a “V” shape; pinking shears give a realistic-looking jagged edge to the flowers.
These tissue paper flowers look like chrysanthemums when completed.
To create other types of flowers, cut the ends of the paper into scallops, or simply leave them uncut.
Fluffing and Shaping Your Tissue Paper Flower
Shaping the Flowers for Your Centerpiece
1. Start from the inside core of the tissue paper flower and gently pull, separate, and fluff up each individual section of the tissue paper.
2. Work from left to right, pulling and fluffing the sheets of tissue paper to form a flower shape.
3. Don't worry if the tissue paper tears because this just adds to the charm and originality of the creation.
4. When all the sections of tissue paper have been pulled up, take the pinking shears and make several vertical cuts into the tissue paper flower petals at random intervals.
5. Next, hold the flower by the pipe cleaner stem and trim the edges of the tissue paper to shape and form the flower.
6. Shake the flower briskly to fluff out the edges.
7. It doesn't have to be a perfect shape as the more irregular the shape, the more realistic the flower.
Your Flower Is Ready to Add to Your Centerpiece
Completing the Centerpiece With Finishing Touches
Crumple several sheets of newspaper and place them in the bottom of the box.
As you finish each flower, arrange it in the box. Keep making tissue paper flowers until the box is full and the centerpiece is arranged to suit.
By following these instructions, even a child can learn how to make tissue paper flowers for a centerpiece.
This makes an inexpensive but colorful party decoration, and as a bonus, it develops fine motor skills for kids while providing excellent therapy for elderly people with arthritis and other motor disabilities.

This is a really cute, crafty idea. Thanks for sharing and inspiring me!
Used to make these when I was little, but I'm sure they never looked this good. Thanks for the reminder Donna - will get my little girl on these next week I think!
Awww! This has taken me back to my kid years! I used to love doing this! They can be as colourful as you like!! Great Post!! :)
Wow, your Tissue Paper Flowers are really beautiful, I think I will give it try, you gave really good instructions.
I love this gemDonna and will try it out with my grandchildren. An up/useful/beautiful plus bookmark here.
Take care and enjoy your day.
Eddy.
Those are gorgeous, Donna. I love them. I'm planning a girls' night soon and this will work nicely and should be inexpensive, which I love.
Love this idea. I am always looking for ways to cut costs at parties (without looking like it!) Think I might try this at my friend's baby shower. Thanks for sharing this hub with us - voted up and awesome!
This is a great hub! And this would make a great decorating idea for lots of different types of parties. Beautiful and inexpensive. You can't beat that!
You can't dip these in wax if you make them out of tissue paper, but you can if you make them out of crepe paper. Don't know if you remember Mom and Grandma Mintie making crepe paper flowers and dipping them or not, but I sure do. (Showing my age, now!) Also, if chenille stems or pipe cleaners aren't available, fine gauge wire can be used to wrap the blossoms, and it's usually available at a hardware store if there's not a craft store in the area. Love your bouquet, it's gorgeous!
Great ideas, I will bookmark this for future use. Thank you for sharing your article.
I used to make tissue paper flowers as a kid- it was one of my favorite activities! I should give it a go again. Thanks for the lovely Hub!
nice article
I remember doing these as a kid, or some form of it anyway. And my own kids did them at school for Mother's Day cards. They do make a nice centerpiece. Good hub, and thanks for sharing.
I'm not quite sure where but i've seen paper flowers before, they are beautiful. I have a Sister who loves doing craft projects. Maybe she will enjoy this article..Thank you for sharing...
Oh I do like this! It's inexpensive and you get a product that looks good at the end. It's easy and well laid out with directions I think my class could follow. I know what our first art project will be when we go back to school tomorrow. I wonder if the finished flowers could be dipped in hot, clear wax to make them last longer. Thank you. I know my class will enjoy this. We are going to use red, white and pink for Valentine's Day flowers that we will then give away.
My kids made these years ago. They are an easy, inexpensive and fun project whenever you need an indoor activity.
Thanks for explaining how to make these! I love to be creative and make something beautiful as this. Looks fun too:)
Tina
I was totally excited to find your beautiful craft as my grandmother made paper flowers and I had forgotten how she did it.
Arn't they just gorgeous!
I will definitely be making these following your instructions. Pipe cleaner must be a thin wire so I will shop around for this, maybe the art shop will be the place to go.
Would you suggest I rather buy a kit as advertised?
So you know what I will be up to in the weeks to come!
I'm happy!
I haven't crafted with tissue paper in years. Your hub brought back fond memories. I will try my hand at making tissue paper flowers again. Awesome hub!
